A brief history :Chamarajanagar is 61 Kms away from Mysore, located in a plain land surrounded by small hillocks.The Chamarajanagar was also known as ARIKUTARA or ARIKOOTARA and also as Wodeyanooru. The 9 th Chamaraja Wodeyar was born in Chamarajanagar in year 1774. At the place of his birth, in his rememberance JANANA MANTAP has been built and it has been declared as Heritage Structure by the Govt. Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar son of Chamaraja Wodeyar, remodelled the town in the year 1826 he built the Chamarajeshwara Temple.Other temples located inside Chamarajanagara town are Bhujangeshwara,veerabhadrana Gudi,Kadu Narayana Swamy, Choudeshwari, Kannikaparameshwari etc.

The Chamarajeshwara Temple:     
In the year 1826 Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar built Chamarajeshwara temple. According to Hindu calander in Ashada Masam,the cart festival of presiding deity of the temple is held with much fun fair, where newly married couple come and offer prayers to the deity for fullfillment of their objectives.


To the East of the city around 5 Kms from centre of the city,  the Haralukote Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple is situated ." Hanuma Chintana " and "Sri Hanuma Suprabhata" these two prose articles depict the historical importance of the place.

Hogenakal Falls : Hogenakal Falls is situated at about 30 Kms from M.M.Hills and is famous and beautiful falls in Chamarajanagar District.It is situated at the Border of Tamil Nadu and karnataka.
 

Biligiri Rangana Betta: The Hill is covered with thick forests and it is at a height of 5091 feet above sea level and it has  width of 16 kms at the base to the south .There is a temple for BiliGiriRangaSwamy at the top of the hill and thats why its known as name B.R.Hills.The temple is of Dravidian style.Even though deity is that of lord venkatesha it is popularly known by the name Ranganatha Swamy.The idols of Ramanuja and Alva has been placed in this temple.Kanakadasa guha,Brindavana and other temples on the hills are of religious importance.The remains of a fort [kanchina kote] said to be built in 15-16th centuryby the Shivasamudra Gangaraja can be found here. A small rivulet flowing at the foot of the hills is called Bhargava Thorey.The hills are inhabitated by the Soliga Tribal peaple and this forest has rich flora and fauna. 


Elephants in BandipurGopala Swamy Betta : It is at a distance of 16 Kms South of Gundlupet. It ia at a height of 1446 Mts above mean Sea level. The area of Hill is 25 Kms. The temple ia at the distance of 5 Kms from the base of the hill. It is also known by other names such as Kamalachala,Kanjagiri, Goverdhanagiri. From a distance it looks like it is covered by snow always.Hence the name Himavadh Gopalaswamy Hill. The 1504 Nanjangud Gazettier mentions this place as Moodanakote. The tradition says that the Agastya saint came here to pray to god and make this place a spiritual centre,while  praying when the god Gopalaswamy appeared in front of the asint, the asint asked the god to settle in the hills itself. For this the God Gopalaswamy agreed and settled with his wives Rukmini and Sathyabama. The saint Koundinya is known to have been here. From this saint, Koundinya river is said to have been born in this hill.


Elephants in BandipurThe Bandipur National Park is 50 km off Chamarajanagara on the way to Ooty and a famous tiger reserve. Nesting in the foothills of the Nilgiris, the Bandipur National Park was formed by extending the Venugopal Wildlife Park , set up in 1931 by the Mysore Maharajas. It is one of the tiger reserves in the country. Spread over an area of 875 Sqkm the park was a popular game resort  , the flora in the forest comprises Teak, Rosewood, Honne, Mathi, Bamboo and Sandal Trees. The important animals in the park are Tiger, Elephant, Gaur, Leopard, Chital and Sambar. Birds like the Peafowl, Partridge, Quail, Hornbill and Ibis are also found here. Apart from these, Dhole(wild dog), Sambar, Muntjac or Barking Deer, Giant Squirrel and sometimes Sloth Bear and Nocturnal Porcupine and Blacknaped hare may be seen in the sanctuary. 

 

Huligana Muradi : It lies 6.5 Kms to the South of Terakanambi. It is famous for Venkataramaswamy temple. It is also known by another name Sheshadri. It was built by Sahukar Dasakeshava Setty of Terakanambi in 1629. The Vykunta Narayana swamy temple and the Ammanavara temple was built in 1629. 

K Gudi : Kyatharayana Gudi is Situated at about 20 Kms from Chamarajanagara. It is a famous  Forest trekking and forest sight seeing.And is also famous for forest resorts we can see plenty of wild animals such as elephants,deers, reptiles etc.
